Preserving Fresh Sardines for Bait

With the current Sardine Run in full swing, many of us would like to keep our Sardines for later use. To ensure that your sardines stay fresh and usable for later dates, follow these tips and you should be fine. PS: This works for all bait fish, ie. Red Eye, Maasbanker, Mackerel, Karanteen, Shad etc. 1. When you get your Sardines, on the beach, make sure they are placed in a cooler box filled with ice and sea water. (Ice keeps it cold, and water helps keep them firm, no smashing of sardines) 2. When you get home, dump them into a tub of water filled with ice and salt. 3. Thereafter take each one and wrap individually with cling wrap 4. Place in freezer, separately either on a grid or tray, until they are frozen 5...Read More

Xarion Mathuray - Giant Guitar Fish (Sandshark) on the KZN South Coast

We went on a mission to get Xarion into a Shark today. We were hoping for a Small Grey Shark or a possible Flatfish. Well it was Mission Accomplished, with Xarion outfishing both myself and Jerome. Unfortunately conditions in the Durban area were not too good so we headed a little further down the South Coast and finally found a great spot with the sand bank a little closer and water that still had some discoloration. We quickly got our baits in the water and Xarion was the first to go tight with a Spinner Shark. After landing the Spinner, we helped him with his second bait and got it into the water. Shortly after that Jerome managed to get a Spinner...Read More

Fishing Durban Warner Beach for Garrick - 20 August 2023

Shaun, Chantel and Ronald headed to Warner Beach on the South Coast of Durban to target Garrick and other edibles. It was an outgoing tide and we opted to get our Live Baits in the water at first light. Conditions were very good however the Garrick somehow did not get the invite and we spent the better part of the morning with little action, except a short take on a sardine bait that Ronald had thrown onto the sand bank. The fish took off with quite a speed but soon dropped the bait. With the day warming up and the tide dropping lower and lower. Ronald opted to try for Shad on the Rocks. He was rewarded with 4 decent sized Shad. The tide was fully out by 11am and things were looking too quiet. Shaun decided to have a last throw with a Sardine Bait on the sandbank...Read More
