Sardine Run 2023

If the weather here in KZN at the moment is anything to go by, I'd say this year’s Sardine Run is fast approaching. Temperatures along our coastline have dropped significantly over the past few weeks and many of us are rubbing our hands together with the thoughts of what’s to come. The shiny silver bullets are coming! Yes people it’s time to get yourself in readiness for all the action and excitement that the Sardine Run brings. So with that said, we here at TackleBag will endeavour to keep you well informed of any and all Sardine Run Action. So stay tuned to this thread for all the latest news and reports. Shad a plenty at Winkels

Shad a plenty at Winkels. Had a blast this morning with my son catching Shad at Winkels. They were a bit late on the bite but finally got stuck in.

Sardine Run 2023 Update - Sighting Map

So great news gents. The Sardines are well on their way. With first reports coming in of sightings at Qhora Mouth on the 23rd May 2023, the latest news is that shoals have been spotted further north in the Mdumbi Area of the Transkei on the 25th May 2023. These sightings are fairly deep, with thousands of gannets reported to be feeding on them. Which is normal behavior as the Sardines pass through the Eastern Cape. As they enter the KZN Coastline they will move closer to our shores and bring with them the fun and excitement of the Sardine Run.

Back to fishing - Warners Trip

My son and I decided to head down to Warners after a long time of not fishing. The sea conditions were perfect but fishing was tough. Lots of peckers around and our baits hardly survived even 5 minutes in the water. After a tough morning we managed to land one lonely Shad. My live bait was out for about an hour and a half but no takers. Even though the fish were scarce we still had a great day at the beach.

Early Winter Trip to Port St Johns – Day 2

The day started of slower than we planned, the cold seemed to be more biting than the fish and we only managed to get down to the beach at around 6:30am. We needed live bait so first up on the days agenda was scratching around for any and all live bait. Sadly only a few Blacktails fell prey to our bait mission and we decided that they will have to suffice. We proceeded to slide out the Blacktails in the hope of catching a Garrick or Kob. Once our live baits were out we decided to get out our scratching setups, and while doing this one of the guys that still had his live bait rig on went tight with a decent sized Bronze Bream, which proved too much for the tiny hooks...Read More

Fishing for sport

Good evening guys I wanted to give my 2cent advice to guys fishing for sport, I know it's a controversial topic but please give this some good thought, just for your own pleasure you put God creation under so much of pain and stress rather you fish cause you putting food on the table, you cannot control what you hook so that is justified but intentionally trying to is wrong and I don't think any religion allows this.

Garrick to kick off the 2023 Winter Season

Jerome Charles managed to get himself one of the early Garricks for this 2023 season, bagging this lovely 10kg Garrick last week. The fish was caught using a Live Karanteen.

Early Winter Trip to Port St Johns – Day 1

A few of my friends and I decided to drive through the night from Durban and we reached Port St Johns in the early hours of a very cold morning. Although we were excited to be there, we had to rest for a bit after the long overnight drive. Finally we decided to slide out some live bait which we had brought with us from Durban. About 10 minutes after our baits settled, my friends rod just takes off, and he was Fish On! The fish had us guessing a bit as it came close to the side and kept fighting up against the rocks.
