The Sardine Run - An anglers perspective

Wow, what a day. Started off at 8am headed down to Scottburgh. On arrival I had to immediately turn around and head back to Winkelspruit. We spent all of 2 hours assisting Netters and chasing sardines, then we received a call that Sards were spotted at Amanzimtoti, ruched there only to find a huge shoal but too far out. Then received word of Sardines at Isipingo. Got into the bakkie and rushed there and only see one Net being pulled, and then just in a flash, all hell broke loose with net after net being dropped. All along the stretch of beach there were nets being pulled, sardines were everywhere.

It was an amazing sight to watch as shoals kept popping up behind the backline, out of reach of our Rods but exciting none the less, we scavenged for fresh sardines in the water around the nets and soon had more than our fair share for bait. Eagerly awaiting an opportunity to get a bait in the water and hopefully get that much anticipated Garrick or Kob. Needless to say with all the boats, nets, people and vehicles on that beach, it was difficult to find a spot to fish. Only towards the afternoon did we get a chance to get our baits in the water, and we waited and waited, but no big fish.

Even though there was no fish, the fun, excitement, exhilaration and adrenaline we endured today was all worth it.

If you have never experienced the Sardine Run, please do yourself a favour and head down to the beach this weekend. You will thank me for it.

I fished after work at Isipingo. There was allot of chum in the water. Garnets were still picking up floating sardine. Here is a pic of the sards that were eaten by the fish. I saw lots of mullet in the back wash.

That's the news I received Sharon from a backline Skipper.

I Just checked the live beach cams of addington and could not see any activities taking place. might just be out of camera view though.
