Saturday afternoon Garrick Hunt
We decided to go have a few throws in search of some Garrick on Saturday afternoon. Met up with Jerome Charles on the beach. And thankfully he managed to get us some live bait before we arrived. My son Xarion and I quickly rigged up and proceeded to slide out our Live Karanteen.
This was Xarion's first attempt at fishing for Garrick with Live Bait. He was really excited and was hoping to get his first prize catch. With our live baits now well settled in the deep blue trough that lay before us. The wait began.
We decided to have some fun with the light tackle while waiting, and not very long after we did, Erica went on with a very nice Stumpnose which she quickly landed. This gave us a little inspiration and I decided to rig up my KP and try some old school fishing. Just to pass the time. My first throw with a Crayfish bait rigged on a double hook scratching trace and I was pulled flat. Jerome had a chuckle at how long it was taking me to wind the fish in on the KP's one to one ratio, but to my delight I finally landed a juvenile Dusky Kob. It was obviously undersize and just as I unhooked it, Jerome noticed Xarions live bait Rod bouncing up and down.
Jerome and Xarion rushed to the rod, while I put my Kob into the live bait bucket. No time to release it as I rushed to video Xarion. As I got there Xarion was now on with what we thought was a Garrick. Thanks to Jerome for helping Xarion set the hooks and coaching him on how to set the drag and fight the fish. Xarion was all smiles and I took a few pics and a video.
Sadly after a few minutes the fish managed to escape. We later realised that they fish was a Grey shark or a big Shad as it had completely bitten off his trace. Xarion was quite disappointed. But he was also pumped and quickly got another Live Bait out.
Sadly the rest of the afternoon proved not so much fun as the Garrick did not play the game. We did however continue to enjoy the scratching session, with a few smaller Blacktails and Erica managing a lovely Silverbream Double Up.
We packed up around 5:30 and called it a day. All in all it was a great afternoon out and Xarion has vowed to come prepared for the Toothy Critter that stole his trace.
