Porpoise vs Dolphin
I was just reminded of a common mistake many people and anglers make, when it comes to identifying dolphins. Very often you will hear people refer to dolphins as Porpoises along the KZN Coastline. Just some knowledge for those that didnt know. Porpoises are not found along the South African Coast. "Porpoises are not very widespread, with many specialising near the polar regions" - Wikipedia.
As can be seen in the Pic above, Porpoises do not have the pronounced snout like dolphins do.
Very enlightening Ron, I always knew these two species as 'dolphins'
So are those fish we SEE chasing the sardines and following the boats in the durban bay --porpoises
Thank u for the informative info,so wat we see in the backline wn the "dolphins" swim n jump in large numbers is that dolphins or porpoises
Guys, as per Ronald's initial post, Porpoises are not found along the South African coast.

Well, Jace you could very well be right. Those Mammals you see in the harbour could be Finless Porpoises, however that would have to mean that those mammals you see in the harbour do NOT have dorsal fins and that the water in the Harbour is Freshwater, as your Wiki link refers to FINLESS Porpoises, which are Freshwater mammals. (See Pic attached).
