Mozambique
Good day guys and girls. I'm going to be in Ponta do Oura from the 05th of July to the 11th. Its my first time so I have a lot of questions. Hope you'll don't mind. Please advise on the fishing spots I should visit. Do I require a fishing permit? Can I get fresh bait or should I stick to spinning only? Google is not as good as the guys on this site. Thanks
Hi Calvin, i have fished that area three times. I managed to catch a wolf herring and a couple of wave garrick on a 10 foot spinning outfit. We also fished with six foot drop shot rods and light tackle - we hammered the wave garrick and bastard mullet. Try and walk as much as you can, there is a lot of scattered reef in the water. we didnt fish much with bait, but Im sure if you put out a mackeral at night on slide, you should pick up a honeycomb, sandie or some toothie bugger.
Sounds exciting, I will diffidently want to throw out a live bait. I'm so looking forward to this trip and time is draaaaagging along. Thanks for the feedback. Really appreciate it.
Hi Calvin,
Ponto on the surf, in recent years is more a tourist / water sport destination for many with Jet Skis, dives, etc. Deeper in off the boat is great. However if you walk South and fish off the point / ledges on the pushing tide with plugs, it's great.
A small Bait selection is available at the supermarket next to the Restaurant at the only "big shopping centre". It is advisable to take your own bait along.
If your accommodation is closer to the restaurant / shopping block then early mornings and late afternoons it's also advisable to walk north to the quieter end. Also decent for fishing.
Lot's of large sandbanks. So you could wade the channels and then get onto the sandbanks to "fish out" on the outgoing tides. Just watch for the strong "Rips".
Take care & enjoy! Please do give us feedback on your return.
Regards
Fazel
Thanks Fazel for the info provided. This will help me greatly. I was told I cannot take bait cross boarder? I'm going to Swaziland first then to Mozambique. You think they will allow me to take bait? I'm having trouble getting my son's unabridged certificate, any ideas to speed up the process? I will have a report with pics ready. Thanks
Hi Calvin. It's a pleasure.
We have taken bait across many times (Kosi broder). No problems. So I don't think you would have problems.
Hope your son's unabridged is now sorted. Home Affairs in recent times have been good / faster with these. I had 2 of my kids done last December within a week. Hope you get sorted there.
Also remember to inform your insurance company or financial institution (if vehicle is financed) before your trip. They will forward you the necessary docs for cross border.
Hope all goes well for you. Take care and enjoy. Awaiting your reports and pics.
Regards
Fazel.
If you taking bait across the border, keep your receipts from the tackle shop as proof that it is bait. We have never had a hassle, but then again, no one has ever checked or asked...
Hi, thanks for all your help. All my documents are in order now. What a relief.
Feeling excited. Cant wait.
Hi Guys, Unfortunately, due to some family/personal reasons i never went to Mozambique which was really really sad and frustrating. i did however stay at Swaziland for 5 days. That is a top country. I tried dam fishing but no luck. I wanted to try Tiger fishing in Jozini, however the water was to low and could not due to the amount of crocs. Im going to plan a trip to Mozambique in December. thanks to all the guys that provided me with all the info i needed.
