Look for marine fish for my tank
Can someone please help. I just started a marine aquarium and I'm looking to get my own fish. I have the marine aquarium license but I don't have the skill to catch the little ones. My diving is average but I can't seem to get close enough to get them in the net. So my question is what net should I use and where should I go?
I built a net with clear plastic on a 1.5m pole with some normal net mesh at the back.

There are many shallow pools were others like yourself collect many different specie
you have a whole 1km range to collect them and one can make it a days outing with the kids
most pools there are fairly shallow

Ashlen, it takes time to learn how to catch them. I suggest you start off in shallow rock pools. Approach them very slowly, and before reaching out with your net, look around at any escape routes the fish can use. Position yourself, your net and possibly a small stick or object that you can use to chase them into your net. I use a small thin plastic straw like pipe with a Yamashita Fishing Skirt cable tied to the end to chase them into my net. PS: A neon green net is not the option. Fish get scared quickly so use dark colour nets and clothing.
Try using a cut off 2l coke bottle , used to work well for me.
Hi Ashlen, not an easy task, but not impossible. I sometimes had to drain out most of he water in the rock pools to catch them. With a bit of luck, you can find them in rock pools along our coast, especially during Spring and Summer. Don't add the common Sergeant Major to your tank, you will regret it, as did I. Best places I found were: Mission Rocks, Umdhloti, Umhlanga, Richards Bay Harbour, Salt Rock, Ballito, and Port Edward, with Ballito and Port Edward yielding the most diverse species most of the time. Remember to acclimatize and quarantine fish before adding to display tank. Research species first.
I have just decommissioned my 4ft tank, after running it for quite long time. Livestock and some stuff sold, but still have some stuff like the tank and stand, R.O. Machine, Refractometer, Aragonite substrate, some live-rock, lift pump, etc. if you're interested.
