I just put them in a bucket with about 60% water and leave an air stone in....keeps them alive for more than a day

Get a K.P. As you mentioned, its for gulley fishing. The reel will get wet by splashing waves and handling when fishing in gullies.

I will second that, get a kp if u gully fishing. If u planing to spin with set up, then go for Grinder, 3000 to 5000 size.
